Toenail Fungus: What Is It?
Toenail fungus is a type of fungal infection (also known as onychomycosis) that affects the nails on your toes. The infected toenail takes on a milky or yellowish appearance and can become brittle along the edges. Two of the most common fungi causing nail infections are dermatophytes and yeast. Dermotophytes are the most common for toenail infections while yeast infections are seen more in fingernails.
What Causes Toenail Fungus?
Toenail fungus as the name suggests is caused by a type of fungus. It can also be caused by yeast or mold which grow within the toenails. The fungus likes to grow in dark and damp places. Since the feet are often covered with shoes, they get hot and sweaty -- creating conditions which are conducive for the fungal growth.
Risk Factors for Developing Toenail Fungus
One of the main risk factors for getting toenail fungus is having heavy perspiration around your feet which could be due to wearing socks that are not absorbent or wearing closed-toe shoes for extended periods. If you have cuts on the skin around your toes or an injured nail, the likelihood of getting toenail fungus also increases. Having a compromised immune system or suffering from diabetes can also put you at greater risk.
Symptoms of Toenail Fungus
Toenail fungus often starts out as small white or yellow spots under the nail. The fungus causes the nail to become thick and discolored. Sometimes the affected nail has a yellowish, milky appearance and can also develop brittle edges. In worse cases, the toenail can even turn brown or black. Other symptoms include pain and a bad odor coming from the affected toenail.
Treatment of Toenail Fungus
One of the most recommended home remedies to eliminate toenail fungus is to soak your feet in a weak solution of water and vinegar. Another idea is to apply Vick's Vapor Rub to the affected toenail. After you take a bath or shower, make sure that you dry your toes completely. Use a hairdryer if necessary. By keeping your feet dry, you will prevent the fungus from thriving.
Toenail Fungus Prevention
If you have to wear covered shoes during the summer months, make sure you change your socks every day. Bring a change of socks with you to work and change to a dry pair of socks halfway through the day. If you can wear sandals, that would be a better option as it gives your feet room to breath and can prevent them from sweating. Do not allow your feet to remain damp. If you eliminate the conditions favorable for the fungus to grow, you will prevent the infection from starting in the first place. You can also use powder on your feet before you put on your socks. After taking a shower, make sure you dry your toes completely.
